Egypt Train Collision: Deadly Crash in Giza Leaves Several Dead and More Than 100 Injured
Giza, Egypt | November
A major railway accident in Egypt’s Giza province has caused multiple deaths and left more than 100 people injured after two passenger trains collided on Sunday. The incident occurred in the Al-Ayyat district, approximately 52 kilometres south of Cairo, triggering a large-scale emergency response.

The collision involved two passenger services travelling on different routes. According to Egyptian railway authorities, a train travelling from Giza towards Fayoum struck the rear of another train operating between Cairo and Aswan.
The impact caused several carriages to derail, leaving passengers injured and prompting an extensive rescue operation.
Initial figures released by Egypt’s Health Ministry reported four deaths and 88 injuries. Later reports from international news agencies cited an increased toll of seven deaths and 112 injuries.
How the Train Accident Happened
According to Egyptian National Railways, the accident involved train No. 134, operating on the Giza-Fayoum route, and train No. 2010, travelling from Cairo towards Aswan.
The Giza-Fayoum train reportedly struck the rear of the Cairo-Aswan service between Kafr Ammar and Al-Raqqa railway stations.
The collision caused several passenger carriages to leave the tracks, creating a serious emergency for passengers and railway personnel.
Authorities have not yet established the precise technical reason behind the collision.
Massive Rescue Operation Launched
Emergency services quickly mobilised following reports of the accident.
Egypt’s Health Ministry initially confirmed that 72 ambulances had been deployed to evacuate injured passengers and transport them to nearby medical facilities.
Victims were taken to hospitals in Al-Wasta, Al-Ayyat and Atfih for emergency treatment.
Medical facilities in Giza and neighbouring Beni Suef province were instructed to increase their readiness to handle the incoming casualties.
Rescue workers and emergency personnel also worked to clear the damaged railway carriages and assist passengers affected by the collision.
President Sisi Orders Immediate Investigation
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi expressed concern over the accident and directed government agencies to launch an urgent investigation.
He called for anyone found responsible for negligence to be held accountable.
Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly also followed developments and coordinated with relevant ministers regarding medical assistance, emergency services and support for affected families.
The investigation is expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine whether technical failures, operational mistakes or other factors contributed to the disaster.
Railway Services Disrupted After Collision
The accident disrupted railway operations along an important transportation corridor connecting Cairo with southern parts of Egypt.
Egyptian National Railways dispatched emergency teams, cranes and specialised equipment to remove the damaged carriages and clear the tracks.
Authorities also arranged alternative transportation for passengers affected by service interruptions.
Restoring normal railway operations became a major priority following the rescue efforts.
Egypt’s Railway Safety Challenges Return to Focus
The latest accident has renewed concerns about railway safety in Egypt, a country with one of Africa’s largest railway networks.
The country has experienced several serious railway accidents over the years, raising questions about infrastructure maintenance, signalling systems and operational safety.
Although the Egyptian government has invested heavily in modernising its transportation infrastructure, improving railway safety remains an important challenge.
The latest collision highlights the need for effective safety systems, regular equipment inspections and stronger operational monitoring.
Investigation and Relief Efforts Continue
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the deadly collision while medical teams provide treatment to injured passengers.
The government has also directed relevant departments to assist affected families and review compensation arrangements.
Further information about the exact cause of the crash and the final casualty figures is expected as the investigation progresses.
The tragedy in Giza has once again highlighted the importance of railway safety and the urgent need to prevent similar accidents in the future.
