The funding has been transferred to the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking and will support Greece’s participation in Europe’s emerging AI infrastructure network.

The initiative is designed to provide researchers, startups and businesses with access to advanced computing resources needed to develop artificial-intelligence applications. Greece sees the programme as an opportunity to strengthen its position in Europe’s rapidly expanding digital economy.

The investment also forms part of Athens’ broader strategy to attract technology companies and develop advanced digital infrastructure. Government officials have increasingly highlighted AI, cloud computing and high-performance computing as important areas for future economic growth.

Greece’s participation comes as European countries compete to expand domestic AI capabilities and reduce dependence on computing infrastructure located outside the continent. Large-scale computing facilities require substantial electricity and sophisticated data infrastructure, making energy availability an important consideration for future expansion.

The Greek government has also been pursuing wider digital-investment projects, including faster fibre-optic networks, 5G infrastructure and new technology initiatives.

The €350 million AI commitment could therefore help Greece build a stronger role in Europe’s emerging artificial-intelligence ecosystem while supporting research, innovation and technology-driven businesses.
