Heavy Afternoon Thundershowers Expected Across Several Parts of Sri Lanka
Several parts of Sri Lanka are expected to experience unsettled weather today, with atmospheric conditions favouring afternoon thunderstorms across much of the island.

Weather conditions could become particularly active in the North Central, Central, Sabaragamuwa, Western and North Western provinces, where some locations may receive heavy showers. Rainfall could reach around 100 millimetres in isolated areas, creating the possibility of difficult conditions for communities and travellers.
The expected weather pattern is likely to develop more strongly during the afternoon as atmospheric instability increases. While rainfall may remain scattered in some areas, individual locations could experience much heavier downpours over relatively short periods.
Residents in areas vulnerable to flooding are likely to face an increased risk of temporary water accumulation, especially where intense rainfall occurs within a short period. People living close to waterways and low-lying locations may therefore need to remain alert to rapidly changing conditions.
The weather could also affect road travel. Heavy showers can reduce visibility and make roads slippery, while sudden thunderstorms may create additional risks for motorists and pedestrians.
Outdoor activities may also be disrupted in areas where thunderclouds develop. People caught outside during thunderstorms are advised to move to safer locations rather than remain in exposed areas.
Farmers and communities dependent on local weather conditions will also be watching rainfall patterns closely. While rain can provide valuable water for agriculture, excessive precipitation over a short period can create problems for crops, roads and drainage systems.
The distribution of rainfall is expected to vary considerably from one location to another. Some communities may receive only brief showers, while nearby areas could experience significantly heavier rainfall.
Authorities and residents are therefore being encouraged to follow updated local weather information throughout the day. Monitoring changing conditions is particularly important when thunderstorms begin developing rapidly.
With several provinces facing the possibility of heavy afternoon showers, Sri Lanka is expected to experience another day of highly variable weather conditions across the island.
