Heavy Rain Forecast for Several Sri Lankan Districts as Thunderstorms Expected
Sri Lanka is facing the possibility of heavy rainfall across several parts of the country, with meteorological authorities warning that some areas could receive more than 50 millimetres of rain.

The latest forecast indicates that intermittent showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts. Particularly heavy rainfall is possible in parts of Galle, Matara, Kalutara and Ratnapura districts.
Several spells of rain are also expected in the North-Western Province. Meanwhile, Uva and Eastern provinces, along with Mullaittivu and Polonnaruwa districts, may experience showers or thunderstorms later in the day.
The weather situation could also affect coastal areas. Meteorological authorities have warned that strong winds may develop during thunderstorms, while some surrounding sea areas could become rough. Winds over certain coastal waters may temporarily reach speeds of around 50–60 kmph.
Officials have urged the public to take precautions against sudden strong winds and lightning during thunderstorms. People in areas expecting heavier rainfall are also advised to remain alert to rapidly changing local weather conditions.
The latest forecast was issued by Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology, with the current update published on September 18.
