Italy Arrests 20 Suspects in Major Labour Exploitation and Migrant Trafficking Investigation
Rome, Italian authorities have detained 20 people in a major investigation into alleged criminal networks accused of exploiting agricultural workers and facilitating the illegal movement of migrants.
The operation was carried out by the Carabinieri’s labour-protection units with support from territorial units across several Italian provinces, including Cosenza, Naples, Bologna, Sassari and Mantua.
According to investigators, the operation targeted two alleged criminal organizations suspected of operating in the agricultural sector and exploiting vulnerable workers. Authorities said the investigation uncovered links between illegal migrant trafficking and the systematic exploitation of labourers in agricultural fields.
The 20 detainees include 18 Pakistani nationals, one Indian national and one Bangladeshi national, according to the Carabinieri. Investigators describe those targeted as alleged leaders, organizers and intermediaries within the two groups.
The investigation was coordinated by the Anti-Mafia District Prosecutor’s Office in Catanzaro. Authorities said the inquiry was extensive and continued over a prolonged period before the enforcement operation was launched.
Investigators allege that the groups were involved in illegal labour intermediation and exploitation, reduction to slavery, extortion and facilitating irregular immigration.
During the operation, police also carried out searches of locations and individuals connected with the investigation. Investigators seized paper and electronic material that could provide further evidence about the alleged criminal structures.
Among the material reportedly recovered were records described as hidden accounting books. Authorities said these documents were allegedly used to record workers’ hours and money that was forcibly taken from them.
Police also seized mobile phones and computer equipment. Investigators intend to conduct forensic examinations of the devices in an effort to establish additional details about the alleged network and possible activities involving the sale of entry visas.
The authorities said the investigation revealed what they described as a troubling connection between the illegal trafficking of people and exploitation in agricultural work.
The enforcement action involved hundreds of members of the Italian Carabinieri working in coordination across multiple regions. Authorities said additional individuals remain under investigation and their positions are being examined by prosecutors.
The case remains at the preliminary-investigation stage. The people detained are suspects and have not been definitively convicted. Under Italy’s constitutional principle of the presumption of innocence, guilt can only be established through a final court judgment.
The investigation is expected to continue as prosecutors examine the evidence collected during searches and determine whether further arrests or charges may follow.
Italian authorities say operations of this type are aimed at dismantling criminal structures that profit from vulnerable workers and irregular migration while identifying those who allegedly organize and benefit from such activities.
