Vilnius Expands Diplomatic Engagement Across the Pacific
VILNIUS: Lithuania has taken part in the Pacific Islands Forum for the first time, marking a new step in the country’s efforts to build stronger diplomatic and economic links with Pacific nations.
Lithuanian Ambassador to Japan Aurelijus Zykas represented the country at the 55th Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, where the gathering brought together countries and territories from across the Pacific.
During the event, the Lithuanian diplomat held discussions with representatives from Micronesia, Palau, the Marshall Islands, Taiwan, New Zealand and other partners.
A major focus of the meetings was development cooperation and the potential for Lithuanian companies to participate in digital transformation projects in the Pacific region.
Lithuania also highlighted its plans for deeper engagement with Pacific partners during its upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union. Officials see the region as an area where cooperation can be expanded in technology, development and environmental initiatives.
Palau received particular attention during the discussions, with Lithuania expressing interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The country’s participation also provided an opportunity to discuss support for Ukraine and broader issues involving international law, territorial integrity and security.
Lithuanian officials believe greater engagement in the Pacific can benefit both sides by creating new partnerships while giving European initiatives greater visibility in the region.
The move represents a broader expansion of Lithuania’s diplomatic outreach beyond its traditional European priorities.

Lithuania is expected to continue developing contacts with Pacific governments and organizations, particularly in digital transformation, development cooperation and environmental protection. The country’s future EU Council presidency could provide another platform for strengthening these relationships.
