Massive Drone Attack on Moscow Region Leaves Two Dead, Governor Says
Moscow, September 20, 2026: At least two people have been killed in a large-scale drone attack across Russia’s Moscow Region, according to regional Governor Andrey Vorobyev. The attack caused fires and structural damage in several municipalities, with emergency crews deployed across affected areas.
Vorobyev said the drone assault was still underway as authorities assessed the damage and dealt with the aftermath of strikes on residential and industrial locations.
Hundreds of Drones Reportedly Intercepted
According to the governor, at least 249 drones were jammed or destroyed between 3:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Moscow time across 17 municipalities in the Moscow Region.
The reported interceptions occurred as Russian air-defence and electronic-warfare systems responded to the large-scale attack.
Authorities continued monitoring the situation after the initial wave, with officials warning that the attack had not yet ended.
Two Fatalities Reported
One of the deaths occurred in Sofyino, where a drone struck a three-storey residential building.
The impact damaged six apartments on the upper floor and killed a 44-year-old woman, according to Vorobyev.
Another fatality was reported in the Orekhovo-Zuyevo municipality. An elderly man was inside a house that was destroyed and subsequently caught fire following a reported drone strike.
Authorities were continuing to verify casualty information as emergency operations progressed.
Apartment Buildings Damaged
Several residential properties were reportedly affected across the region.
In the Ramenskoye district, a drone strike caused a fire on the roof of a 21-storey apartment building. Approximately 400 residents, including 70 children, were evacuated from the building.
Twenty vehicles were also reported damaged in the area.
Another serious fire occurred in Kotelniki, on the southeastern outskirts of Moscow, where a drone reportedly struck an apartment building and caused fires affecting apartments on three floors.
Vorobyev later reported damage to three apartment buildings in the Novye Kotelniki residential complex.
Fires Reported at Industrial Sites
The attack also affected non-residential infrastructure.
A warehouse in Sofyino caught fire after being hit, while an industrial facility in the town of Istra, northwest of Moscow, was reportedly damaged.
Additional property damage was reported in Voskresensk, southeast of the Russian capital.
The full extent of the destruction remained under assessment as firefighters and emergency personnel continued working at multiple locations.
Emergency Services Deployed
Firefighters, rescue workers and other emergency personnel were sent to locations where buildings had been damaged or fires had broken out.
Officials were assessing damaged structures, assisting evacuated residents and checking buildings for additional casualties.
The scale of the reported attack required emergency operations to be conducted simultaneously in several municipalities.
