New Zealand Parliament Approves India Trade Agreement, Opening Way for Implementation
Wellington, September 17, 2026: New Zealand’s Parliament has approved legislation implementing a free trade agreement with India, marking a significant development in economic relations between the two countries.

The legislation passed by 93 votes to 29, with support from the opposition Labour Party. The agreement is expected to substantially reduce or eliminate tariffs on around 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India.
The agreement is designed to expand market access for New Zealand businesses and create new opportunities for exporters selling goods to the Indian market. New Zealand’s government has highlighted agriculture, food products and other export sectors as potential beneficiaries.
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described the parliamentary approval as an important milestone in his government’s efforts to strengthen commercial ties with India. The agreement is expected to move toward implementation in the coming months, with October being discussed as a possible timeframe.
India represents a major potential market for New Zealand because of its large consumer base and expanding economy. Lower tariffs could make New Zealand products more competitive, while the agreement could also encourage greater investment and business cooperation between the two countries.
The deal also comes as both governments seek to broaden their economic relationship beyond traditional areas of trade. Greater cooperation could extend to education, technology, services, agriculture and investment.
New Zealand’s economy has recently shown signs of resilience. Official data released on September 17 showed that GDP increased 0.2% in the June 2026 quarter, following 0.8% growth in the previous quarter. Annual economic growth reached 2.6%.
The trade agreement therefore arrives at an important time for New Zealand exporters seeking greater access to international markets.
For India, the agreement could provide additional access to New Zealand goods and strengthen economic ties with a key Pacific partner. Its implementation will depend on completion of the remaining administrative and legal procedures.
The parliamentary vote represents the latest step toward putting the agreement into effect and could pave the way for a broader expansion in India-New Zealand trade over the coming years.
