Nordic Countries Strengthen Cooperation to Protect Critical Supplies

Norway and its Nordic neighbours have agreed to deepen cooperation aimed at protecting access to essential goods and services during crises and periods of heightened security risk.

The Nordic countries signed a joint declaration on September 2, 2026, establishing a framework for stronger cooperation on security of supply and emergency preparedness.

Eight Nordic Participants Join Initiative

The cooperation involves Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark, together with Åland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland.

The participating Nordic countries want to improve their ability to maintain the production, logistics and distribution of critical goods and services when normal supply chains come under pressure.

Supply Chains Become a Security Priority

Norwegian authorities said the changing security situation in Europe has demonstrated the importance of resilient supply chains.

Disruptions to production, transportation or distribution can have consequences well beyond individual countries. Closer Nordic coordination is therefore intended to help ensure that essential supplies continue reaching people and businesses during difficult circumstances.

Cooperation During Crises and War

The declaration covers preparedness for serious crises and, where necessary, wartime conditions.

The Nordic countries will examine ways to coordinate production capacity, logistics and distribution so that resources can be used more effectively across the region.

Business Sector to Play a Role

The initiative will involve relevant authorities as well as businesses whose activities are important to security of supply.

Private companies operate many of the production, transport and distribution systems needed to keep societies functioning, making cooperation between governments and industry an important part of the plan.

Norway Highlights Nordic Strength

Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth said Nordic countries are stronger when they cooperate.

The government believes closer coordination can improve the region’s ability to respond to disruptions while helping critical goods and services reach their destinations even under challenging conditions.

Building Long-Term Preparedness

The declaration is not limited to responding to an immediate crisis. It establishes a basis for developing longer-term Nordic cooperation on supply security.

The participating countries will now work on identifying practical areas where regional coordination can be strengthened.
