Philippe Bouvard Dies at 96: French Media Icon Remembered by Macron
Paris, August 24, 2026: France is mourning the death of veteran journalist, radio host and television personality Philippe Bouvard, who died on Monday at the age of 96 at his home in Cannes. His death was announced by his wife to RTL, the broadcaster with which he was associated for decades.
French President Emmanuel Macron paid tribute to Bouvard in a message on social media, describing him as a distinctive French voice whose wit, humor and freedom of expression had accompanied generations. Macron said France had lost a “free spirit” and extended his thoughts to Bouvard’s family, friends and listeners.
Bouvard was one of the most recognizable figures in French broadcasting. His career stretched across more than six decades and included journalism, radio, television, publishing and theater. He became particularly famous for creating “Les Grosses Têtes” on RTL in 1977, a program that became one of France’s best-known radio shows. He remained its host for 37 years before handing over the program in 2014.
His influence was not limited to radio. Bouvard also became known for “Le Petit Théâtre de Bouvard,” a television program that provided an early platform for several comedians and performers who later became major names in French entertainment.
Born on December 6, 1929, in Coulommiers, Bouvard began his professional journey in journalism. He joined Le Figaro in 1953 and later moved to France-Soir, where he eventually became a senior editorial figure. Over his long career, he produced thousands of articles and programs and wrote numerous books.
Bouvard remained connected to RTL until his retirement in January 2025, marking roughly 60 years associated with the station and its predecessor. His long presence on French radio made him a familiar voice for several generations of listeners.
