Plaskett Fire Containment Improves as California Crews Continue Fighting Massive Blaze
Firefighters battling California’s largest active wildfire have made further progress, with containment of the Plaskett Fire reaching 23% as crews continue working in Monterey County.
The wildfire had burned approximately 29,768 acres by Friday, September 4. Although the fire remains extensive, the increase in containment indicates that firefighters have succeeded in strengthening control lines around portions of the blaze.
The fire has been burning in the rugged Big Sur region, where steep terrain and difficult access can make firefighting operations particularly challenging. Crews are continuing to work along the fire’s edges while monitoring conditions that could cause the flames to spread.
Firefighters are using a combination of ground operations and other resources to contain the blaze and protect areas that could be threatened if the fire expands. Weather conditions remain an important factor because changes in wind, temperature and humidity can quickly influence wildfire behavior.
The latest containment figure is an improvement from earlier in the week, but officials continue to treat the fire as a major ongoing emergency because tens of thousands of acres remain affected.

The Plaskett Fire began on August 26 near the Plaskett area and has since become the largest wildfire currently burning in California. Crews are expected to remain on the fire until containment improves substantially and the threat of further spread decreases.
