Police Shoot Suspect During Arrest in Dutch Town of Bunschoten
Bunschoten, Netherlands — Dutch police have launched an independent investigation after officers shot and injured a man during an arrest operation in the centre of Bunschoten on Wednesday morning.
Police said officers were called to the area at around 10 a.m. following a report about a threatening situation involving a person who was believed to possibly be carrying a weapon.
When officers arrived, the man reportedly fled from the scene. Police pursued him and used force during the attempted arrest. Officers fired their weapons before the suspect was eventually detained at Zeilmakersplein.
The man was injured during the incident and was taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Authorities have not released details about the nature or severity of his injuries.
Because police firearms were used during the operation, the Netherlands’ Rijksrecherche has begun an independent investigation under the supervision of the Public Prosecution Service. Such investigations are designed to establish whether police actions during shootings were lawful and proportionate.
Dutch police said they would not provide detailed information about the circumstances while the investigation is underway, as doing so could interfere with the independent inquiry.
Investigators are expected to examine what happened immediately before the confrontation, whether the suspect actually possessed a weapon and the circumstances in which officers decided to use their firearms.
No further details about the suspect’s identity or possible charges have been released at this stage.
The incident temporarily drew a significant police presence to the centre of Bunschoten as officers secured the area and began collecting evidence.
The investigation remains ongoing. Once the Rijksrecherche completes its inquiry, the Public Prosecution Service will assess whether the officers’ actions complied with the law.
