Powerful El Niño Raises Global Concerns as Scientists Warn of Extreme Weather

A rapidly strengthening El Niño developing across the tropical Pacific is drawing growing international attention, with climate scientists warning that the 2026–27 event could become one of the most powerful El Niño episodes ever observed.

The World Meteorological Organization says El Niño is continuing to intensify and is expected to influence global climate patterns during the August–October 2026 period. Forecast models indicate unusually warm Pacific waters, with sea-surface temperature anomalies potentially exceeding 2.9°C in key monitoring areas.

The US Climate Prediction Center has also reported a greater than 90% probability of a very strong El Niño during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026–27. Ocean temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific have already risen substantially, providing a strong signal that the climate pattern is continuing to develop.

The event is being closely watched because El Niño can alter weather patterns thousands of kilometres away from the Pacific Ocean. Changes in atmospheric circulation can increase rainfall in some regions while producing prolonged dryness in others.

Potential Impact on Global Weather

Countries in South America, Asia, Africa and the Pacific region could experience significant changes in rainfall and temperature patterns as the phenomenon develops.

Peru and other parts of western South America are particularly vulnerable to heavy rainfall and flooding during strong El Niño episodes. In contrast, portions of Southeast Asia, Australia and southern Africa can face increased drought risks depending on the evolution of the event.

The effects can also reach North America and Europe through changes in atmospheric circulation. Forecasts indicate that parts of the United States could experience wetter conditions during the coming winter, while some European regions could see changes in rainfall and storm activity.

However, the exact consequences cannot be predicted with certainty because El Niño does not affect every location in the same way.

Risk to Food Production

Agriculture is one of the sectors most exposed to a major El Niño. Changes in rainfall, heat and drought can affect planting conditions, crop yields and water availability.

Global food markets could also feel the effects if major agricultural regions suffer weather-related losses. Coffee, cocoa, grains and other commodities may face supply pressure if unfavorable weather persists across important growing areas.

The risk is particularly important for vulnerable countries where farmers depend heavily on seasonal rainfall and have limited access to irrigation or financial protection.

2027 Could Bring Exceptional Global Heat

Another major concern is the potential influence of El Niño on global temperatures.

The UK Met Office has warned that the developing event could contribute to 2027 becoming the warmest year ever recorded. Scientists expect the large amount of heat stored in the Pacific Ocean to be transferred into the atmosphere as the event reaches its peak.

El Niño itself is a natural climate phenomenon and is not responsible for long-term global warming. However, its warming effect can temporarily add to temperatures that are already elevated because of human-caused climate change.

Governments Begin Preparing

The growing strength of the event has encouraged governments and international organizations to begin preparing for possible impacts before they occur.

The WMO has emphasized that early warnings can help countries protect communities, agriculture, water supplies and other climate-sensitive sectors. Its forecasts are being used to support advance planning in regions considered vulnerable to drought, flooding, extreme heat and wildfires.

The International Research Institute for Climate and Society has also reported an unusually strong signal in its August forecast. Its models show a large majority of forecasts reaching the “very strong” El Niño category, with several projecting exceptionally high temperatures in the Pacific.

A Major Test for Climate Preparedness

The developing El Niño arrives at a time when global temperatures and ocean temperatures are already unusually high. This combination could make the consequences of extreme weather more difficult for communities to manage.

Scientists will continue monitoring Pacific Ocean temperatures, winds and atmospheric conditions over the coming months. The strength of the event, its peak timing and its regional effects will become clearer as additional observations and forecasts become available.

For governments, farmers, businesses and communities, the message is increasingly focused on preparation rather than waiting for the full effects to arrive. Early action could help reduce losses if the developing El Niño produces the severe weather conditions that many current forecasts suggest are possible.
