Saudi Arabia Issues All-Clear in Riyadh After Overnight Aerial Threat Alert

Riyadh, September 19, 2026: Saudi authorities lifted an overnight security warning in Riyadh and the nearby city of Al-Kharj on Saturday after residents received alerts about a potential aerial threat. The development came amid a sharp increase in attacks attributed to Yemen’s Houthi movement against Saudi targets.

Saudi Civil Defence later announced that the danger had passed and urged residents to continue following official safety instructions. Authorities also advised people to avoid gathering or filming in affected areas.

Explosions Reported in Riyadh

The warning was issued during the early hours of Saturday. A Reuters journalist in Riyadh’s Olaya district reported hearing two booms around the time of the alert.

The warning was also extended to Al-Kharj, located east of the Saudi capital. Residents were instructed to remain indoors and follow emergency guidance while authorities assessed the situation.

The alert was particularly significant because it represented the first such warning for Riyadh since the latest escalation involving the Houthis began in July.

Smoke Seen Near Riyadh Airport

Hours after the warning, a large column of dark smoke was reported near Riyadh’s main airport. Reuters footage and photographs showed smoke rising close to the airport area, while flames were also visible in the vicinity of what appeared to be fuel-storage facilities.

At the time of the initial reports, Saudi authorities had not publicly provided a detailed explanation for the smoke or identified the precise location responsible for it.

The developments occurred against the backdrop of repeated missile and drone activity involving Saudi Arabia and the Houthi movement.

Houthis Claim Attacks on Riyadh

Yemen’s Houthi movement later said it had carried out missile and drone attacks against what it described as sensitive locations in Riyadh.

The group also claimed an attack against an Aramco facility in Yanbu, an important Saudi industrial and oil-export centre on the Red Sea coast. The Houthis said their operations were carried out in response to events in Yemen.

Saudi Arabia’s military coalition, meanwhile, said its air-defence systems intercepted a missile directed toward Riyadh. It also reported preventing attacks targeting several other Saudi locations, including Bish, Farasan, Taif and Yanbu.

Growing Security Concerns Across the Region

The Riyadh alert follows additional warnings issued by Saudi Civil Defence in several parts of the country. On Friday night, authorities issued alerts for areas including Jeddah, Taif, Khamis Mushait and Al Ula, although the specific nature of the potential threat was not immediately disclosed.

The latest developments highlight the widening security concerns surrounding Saudi Arabia as fighting involving the Houthis intensifies. Attacks involving missiles and drones have the potential to threaten civilian populations, airports, energy infrastructure and maritime trade routes.

The Red Sea is particularly important because it serves as a major route for international shipping and energy transportation. Continued instability in the area could therefore have consequences extending beyond the immediate conflict zone.

International Concern Over Houthi Attacks

The United Nations Security Council has condemned continued Houthi attacks against Saudi Arabia, including incidents affecting civilian and energy infrastructure. The council has also expressed concern over the wider military escalation in Yemen and called for an end to attacks affecting civilians.

For Saudi Arabia, the latest warning in Riyadh represents another challenge in protecting its major population centres and strategic infrastructure. For residents, the subsequent all-clear provided confirmation that the immediate warning had ended, although authorities continued to emphasize the importance of following official instructions.
