Firefighters Contain Forest Blaze Near Pukanec
BRATISLAVA: Firefighters in Slovakia have been working to contain a forest fire in the Slovak Paradise area after flames spread through a section of coniferous woodland near the Pukanec mountain saddle.
The fire was reported on September 2 in the Hanisková locality on the southern edge of Slovak Paradise. Emergency crews continued operations the following day as difficult terrain made access to the affected area more challenging.
According to information reported by Slovak public broadcaster STVR, the burning area was estimated at roughly two hectares. A helicopter was also deployed to assist firefighters with the operation.
Professional firefighters were supported by volunteer units, a specialized ground-firefighting module and forestry personnel. Their combined effort was aimed at preventing the flames from spreading further through the forest.
Authorities said the fire may have been caused by people collecting forest berries in the area. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the outbreak.
The incident has highlighted the continuing danger posed by fires in dry woodland areas. Forestry officials have urged people to exercise extreme caution and avoid any unnecessary use of fire.
By Thursday evening, Slovak authorities reported that firefighters had brought the fire under control, although teams remained involved in securing the affected area.
The response demonstrates the importance of rapid cooperation between professional emergency crews, volunteers and forestry workers when fires occur in difficult-to-reach mountain terrain.
What Happens Next
Firefighters and forestry personnel will continue checking the affected area for remaining hot spots and monitoring the surrounding forest. Authorities are also expected to assess the circumstances that led to the outbreak.
