## Spain Announces €17 Billion Power Grid Investment Plan to Meet Rising Electricity Demand
**Madrid, September Spain has announced a major expansion of its national electricity transmission network, increasing planned investment to more than **€17 billion** by 2030 as the country prepares for rapidly growing electricity demand driven by electrification and renewable energy development. The investment plan represents a significant increase over the government’s previous spending target.

The Spanish government said the additional funding will strengthen the country’s high-voltage power grid, helping connect new renewable energy projects, support electric vehicle growth and improve electricity supply for homes and businesses across the country. Energy Minister Sara Aagesen said Spain’s changing energy needs require a stronger and more modern transmission system.
According to the updated plan, investment in the electricity network will rise by around 30% compared with earlier proposals. The government believes the expansion will improve the capacity of the national grid and reduce future bottlenecks as electricity consumption increases.
Spain has become one of Europe’s leading producers of renewable energy, particularly wind and solar power. However, expanding renewable generation also requires stronger transmission infrastructure so electricity can be transported efficiently from production areas to major cities and industrial regions.
The government expects the new investment programme to support industrial development, digital infrastructure and the wider transition toward cleaner energy. Officials also believe modernising the grid will improve long-term energy security and make the electricity system more resilient.
The announcement comes as European countries continue investing heavily in power networks to accommodate renewable energy, battery storage and increasing electricity use from transport and industry. Spain’s updated strategy places grid infrastructure at the centre of its long-term energy planning through the end of the decade.
The project will now move into the implementation phase, with transmission upgrades expected to be carried out across different regions of Spain over the coming years.
