UNEP Warns Nature Crisis Is Accelerating as One Million Species Face Extinction Threat

New York, August 14, 2026: The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is drawing renewed attention to the accelerating global nature crisis, warning that the deterioration of ecosystems and biodiversity poses serious risks to food supplies, clean water, economies and efforts to tackle climate change.

Healthy ecosystems are fundamental to human survival. Forests, wetlands, oceans, grasslands and other natural systems provide resources and ecological services that support communities and economies around the world. UNEP describes nature as humanity’s lifeline, while emphasizing that these systems are under growing pressure from human activity.

One Million Species Under Threat

One of the most alarming indicators of the biodiversity crisis is the growing number of species facing extinction.

UNEP cites assessments indicating that approximately one million of the world’s estimated eight million plant and animal species are threatened with extinction, with many potentially disappearing within decades if current pressures continue.

The loss of biodiversity is not limited to individual animals or plants. Species are interconnected through ecosystems, meaning that the decline of one population can affect food chains, pollination, soil health, water systems and other ecological processes.

The consequences can ultimately reach human societies through reduced ecosystem services and greater environmental vulnerability.

Why Biodiversity Matters to People

Biodiversity supports many of the systems on which modern societies depend.

Healthy ecosystems help provide food and freshwater while supporting agriculture, fisheries and livelihoods. Natural environments also contribute to climate regulation by storing carbon and maintaining ecological processes.

UNEP has repeatedly emphasized that the deterioration of nature can have direct consequences for human well-being. Its assessment of the nature crisis notes that ecosystem degradation is already affecting large portions of the global population.

The connection between nature and climate is particularly important. Forests, wetlands, peatlands and other ecosystems can store significant amounts of carbon, making their conservation and restoration an important component of climate action.

Human Activity Driving Nature Loss

The biodiversity crisis is being driven by several interconnected pressures.

Changes in the way humans use land and oceans are among the major causes. The conversion of natural habitats for agriculture, cities and infrastructure can destroy or fragment ecosystems.

UNEP identifies additional pressures including pollution, climate change, overexploitation of natural resources and invasive alien species.

Agricultural expansion has been a major contributor to deforestation and habitat loss in many parts of the world. Pollution can damage ecosystems and reduce the ability of species to survive, while unsustainable harvesting can place additional pressure on wildlife and marine resources.

Invasive species can also disrupt native ecosystems by competing with local plants and animals or changing ecological processes.

Global Biodiversity Agreement Offers a Roadmap

In response to the worsening crisis, countries adopted the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework during the UN biodiversity conference in Montreal in December 2022.

The framework establishes four long-term goals for 2050 and 23 action-oriented targets for 2030. Its overall ambition is to halt and reverse biodiversity loss while putting the world on a path toward living in harmony with nature.

One of its most widely recognized objectives is the 30-by-30 target.

Under Target 3, countries agreed to work toward effectively conserving and managing at least 30 percent of terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine areas by 2030, while recognizing the rights of Indigenous peoples and local communities.

Another target calls for at least 30 percent of degraded terrestrial, inland water, coastal and marine ecosystems to be under effective restoration by 2030.

Restoring Damaged Ecosystems

Protecting remaining natural areas is only one part of the global response. Countries also need to restore ecosystems that have already been damaged.

Restoration can involve recovering forests, wetlands, rivers, grasslands, coastal ecosystems and other degraded environments. Successful restoration can improve biodiversity while also strengthening ecosystem services.

The Global Biodiversity Framework specifically calls for large-scale restoration efforts and measures to reduce threats to species and ecosystems.

Such efforts can also produce benefits beyond biodiversity. Restored ecosystems can improve water management, protect soils, support pollinators and contribute to climate resilience.

Tackling Pollution and Invasive Species

The biodiversity framework also addresses pollution and invasive alien species.

Countries have committed to reducing pollution to levels that do not harm biodiversity and ecosystem functions. The framework includes measures addressing excess nutrients, pesticides, hazardous chemicals and plastic pollution.

Invasive alien species are another major concern. The framework calls for countries to identify pathways through which invasive species are introduced and reduce their establishment and spread, particularly in sensitive ecosystems.

These measures recognize that biodiversity protection requires action across multiple sectors rather than conservation efforts alone.

The Economic Dimension of Nature Loss

The nature crisis is also an economic issue.

Agriculture, fisheries, forestry, tourism and many other industries depend directly or indirectly on healthy ecosystems. When ecosystems deteriorate, businesses and communities can face increased risks, from declining natural resources to greater exposure to environmental disasters.

The Global Biodiversity Framework therefore calls for biodiversity to be integrated into government policies, planning, development decisions and financial systems.

It also seeks to reduce environmentally harmful incentives and redirect financial resources toward conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

Progress Toward 2030 Becomes Increasingly Important

With 2030 approaching, implementation of the biodiversity framework is becoming a central issue for governments and international organizations.

The Convention on Biological Diversity has begun the process of reviewing collective progress toward the framework’s targets. The first draft of the global review is intended to strengthen the evidence base for assessing implementation as countries move toward the next stages of the process.

The challenge is substantial because biodiversity protection requires changes across agriculture, energy, infrastructure, finance, consumption and land management.

A Crisis That Also Requires Public Awareness

UNEP’s message extends beyond governments and international agreements. Individuals, businesses and communities also influence the condition of ecosystems through consumption, waste, land use and resource use.

Reducing unnecessary waste, protecting local habitats, supporting sustainable food systems and using natural resources responsibly can contribute to broader conservation efforts.

The scale of the biodiversity crisis may appear overwhelming, but the international framework provides a common direction for action.

The central message from UNEP is clear: protecting nature is not simply about saving wildlife. Healthy ecosystems underpin human health, food security, water supplies, economic activity and climate resilience.

As countries work toward the 2030 biodiversity targets, the decisions made during the coming years will be critical in determining whether the global decline of nature can be slowed, reversed and ultimately placed on a more sustainable path.
