U.S. Missile Stockpiles Under Pressure After Heavy Use in Iran War

The biggest concern is not that the U.S. military has suddenly become incapable of fighting. Rather, the Iran war has exposed a potential mismatch between the enormous consumption rate of modern precision weapons and the speed at which industry can replace them.

Washington, August 8, 2026: The United States is facing a growing challenge to its military readiness after the five-month war with Iran consumed a substantial share of its most advanced long-range precision missiles, according to people familiar with U.S. military inventories and recent assessments.

The depletion has raised questions about how quickly Washington can rebuild its weapons reserves and whether the United States would be prepared for another major conflict requiring large numbers of long-range precision weapons.

Reuters reported that the U.S. Army has used “virtually all” of its stockpile of two important ground-launched missile systems—Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM)—during the conflict. The weapons are designed to strike targets at long distances while keeping launch platforms farther away from enemy defenses.

The issue has become particularly important because the United States must maintain military capabilities not only for the Middle East but also for potential contingencies involving major powers such as China and Russia.

Long-Range Missiles Played a Major Role

ATACMS and PrSM are among the weapons designed to provide U.S. forces with precision strike capabilities at significant distances.

ATACMS is an established U.S. Army missile system, while PrSM represents a newer generation intended to gradually replace ATACMS. Both allow commanders to attack important targets without placing aircraft or ground forces directly next to heavily defended areas.

During the Iran conflict, these capabilities became an important part of U.S. military operations.

The heavy consumption of such weapons has now created a difficult balancing problem: maintaining enough ammunition for ongoing operations while simultaneously rebuilding reserves for future conflicts.

The challenge is not simply the number of missiles remaining. Modern precision weapons require sophisticated components, specialized manufacturing facilities and lengthy production processes.

Stockpile Pressure Extends Beyond Offensive Missiles

The concerns are not limited to ATACMS and PrSM.

Reuters reported that the United States has also consumed substantial quantities of air-defense interceptors during the Iran war. Estimates cited by the news agency indicate that approximately 65% of Patriot interceptors and 38% of THAAD interceptors have been used since the conflict began. Nearly half of the Navy’s Tomahawk cruise-missile inventory has also reportedly been expended.

These systems perform different missions, but their depletion creates a common problem.

The United States must replenish offensive weapons used against Iranian targets while also rebuilding defensive systems needed to protect American forces and allies from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and other threats.

That makes the replenishment effort more complicated than simply increasing production of one missile type.

Why Rebuilding the Arsenal Will Take Time

American defense companies are already working to increase production.

However, expanding production of sophisticated weapons cannot happen instantly.

Rheinmetall said on August 7 that increasing ATACMS production in cooperation with Lockheed Martin would take time. The company expects production to begin at its facility in Germany, but its chief executive warned that rebuilding depleted American inventories could take more than two years.

That warning highlights one of the central problems facing the Pentagon.

A government can place a large order relatively quickly, but manufacturers need time to secure raw materials, expand production lines, recruit specialized workers and obtain components from suppliers.

Some components may themselves have limited manufacturing capacity.

The Ukraine Connection

The U.S. missile shortage also has implications for Ukraine.

American-made ATACMS have played an important role in Ukraine’s war against Russia, giving Ukrainian forces the ability to strike targets deep behind Russian lines.

The United States therefore faces competing demands for some of the same weapons.

Washington has to consider whether existing stocks should be reserved for its own potential operations, supplied to allies or distributed according to immediate battlefield requirements.

This makes the current situation part of a much broader challenge facing Western defense industries.

The wars in Ukraine and Iran have demonstrated how quickly modern conflicts can consume precision-guided weapons.

China Adds a Strategic Concern

The most significant long-term concern may involve the Indo-Pacific.

A potential conflict involving China could require enormous quantities of long-range missiles, particularly because Chinese forces possess extensive missile capabilities and sophisticated air-defense systems.

Military planners have therefore long emphasized the importance of maintaining large stocks of weapons capable of striking targets from a distance.

The depletion caused by the Iran conflict could complicate that planning.

A prolonged conflict in the Pacific would likely require a large supply of precision weapons, meaning Washington cannot simply assume that industrial production can keep pace once fighting begins.

A recent CSIS assessment similarly warned that the Iran war has consumed high levels of several important U.S. munitions and that rebuilding inventories will take years.

Trump Administration Downplays a Broader Crisis

President Donald Trump has pushed back against suggestions that the United States is running dangerously low on weapons.

The administration has emphasized that America retains substantial military capabilities and that defense manufacturers are increasing production.

Trump has also said that the United States continues to possess significant ammunition reserves.

However, the discussion illustrates an important distinction between having sufficient weapons for current operations and maintaining enough stockpiles for a completely separate major conflict.

A military can remain operational while still facing shortages in specific categories of ammunition.

That appears to be the concern highlighted by the recent reporting.

A More Difficult Military Calculation

The missile situation could influence U.S. military planning in several ways.

If stocks of long-range precision missiles decline significantly, commanders may have to rely more heavily on aircraft, shorter-range weapons or other systems.

That can increase operational risks.

Long-range missiles are valuable partly because they allow attacks without putting pilots or launch platforms as close to enemy air defenses.

Using alternative weapons could therefore require more aircraft sorties or expose personnel to greater danger.

Reuters reported that the pressure on precision weapons has already encouraged consideration of riskier piloted bombing missions in some circumstances.

Defense Industry Faces a New Test

The situation is also becoming a major test for America’s defense-industrial base.

For years, the United States maintained relatively high-end military capabilities but produced some sophisticated munitions in comparatively limited quantities during peacetime.

The Iran conflict has exposed the consequences of that approach.

Companies such as Lockheed Martin and Raytheon are increasing production, while international partnerships are being considered to expand manufacturing capacity.

But increasing output requires sustained government funding and long-term contracts.

Defense companies are unlikely to build enormous new factories overnight unless they have confidence that demand will remain high enough to justify the investment.

The Cost of Precision Warfare

Another lesson from the conflict is the financial cost of modern warfare.

Many of the long-range precision weapons involved cost more than $1 million each, according to Reuters.

A large military campaign can therefore consume billions of dollars in missiles and interceptors surprisingly quickly.

That creates a difficult economic equation for governments.

They must finance current operations while also paying to replace weapons that have already been fired.

At the same time, they must invest in new generations of military technology.

What Comes Next?

The Pentagon’s immediate priority will likely be rebuilding depleted inventories while maintaining sufficient weapons for ongoing security commitments.

Several developments will be important to watch:

  • The speed at which ATACMS and PrSM production increases.
  • The expansion of Patriot and THAAD interceptor manufacturing.
  • New U.S. defense contracts for precision weapons.
  • Cooperation between American and European defense manufacturers.
  • Future military assistance to Ukraine.
  • U.S. preparations for possible Indo-Pacific contingencies.
  • Congressional funding for replenishment and expanded production.

The pace of these efforts will determine how quickly the United States can restore its strategic reserves.

A Warning for Future Conflicts

The Iran war has provided an important lesson for military planners: advanced weapons can be extremely effective, but they can also be consumed faster than industrial systems can replace them.

The United States retains one of the world’s most powerful military forces, but maintaining that advantage requires more than sophisticated technology.

It requires resilient supply chains, large manufacturing capacity and the ability to rapidly increase production during a crisis.

For Washington, rebuilding missile inventories is therefore not simply an issue of replacing weapons fired during one war. It is becoming a broader question about whether America’s defense industry can support the demands of a prolonged, high-intensity conflict.
