Copernicus scientists say climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of hot and dry conditions that favor large wildfires, particularly in southern Europe. They also point to a lengthening fire season in parts of the continent.
This does not mean that every individual wildfire can be attributed entirely to climate change. Human activity, land management, accidental ignition and other local factors remain important. But a warmer climate can make the landscape more favorable for rapid fire growth once an ignition occurs.
Firefighting Becomes More Difficult
Authorities are using a combination of ground crews, aircraft, helicopters, water bombing, surveillance drones and other emergency measures.
Indonesia has also attempted cloud seeding in an effort to encourage rainfall. However, the technique has been limited by a lack of suitable clouds in some areas, leaving firefighters dependent on conventional suppression methods.
