Zelenskyy Holds “Constructive” Call With Trump Envoys as Ukraine Visit Plans Take Shape
KYIV — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says diplomatic contacts with the United States are continuing as Washington seeks to advance efforts aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.
In a statement posted on social media on August 31, Zelenskyy said he held a detailed and constructive telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump’s representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The discussion included plans for a possible visit by the two U.S. envoys to Ukraine.
Discussions Focus on Possible Ukraine Visit
Zelenskyy said the U.S. and Ukrainian negotiating teams remain in regular contact and are now working to establish dates for Witkoff and Kushner’s visit to Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian president, such a visit could be useful for developing practical proposals aimed at bringing the war closer to an end. The two envoys have been involved in the Trump administration’s diplomatic efforts concerning the conflict and have held discussions with representatives from both sides.
The potential trip would also give the American officials an opportunity to hold direct discussions with Ukrainian representatives on the ground and further examine Kyiv’s position on a possible peace framework.
Zelenskyy Briefs Envoys on Battlefield
During the call, Zelenskyy said he updated Witkoff and Kushner on developments on the battlefield, including Russian military advances and ongoing strikes.
He characterized recent Russian gains as limited while emphasizing the heavy costs associated with the fighting. The Ukrainian president also indicated that the American envoys were already familiar with many aspects of the situation.
The discussion comes as Russia and Ukraine remain engaged in a prolonged conflict while diplomatic efforts continue to face significant obstacles.
September Seen as an Important Month
Zelenskyy has suggested that September could bring important developments in the diplomatic process.
The Ukrainian president said the teams would remain in close contact to prepare an agenda and determine an appropriate schedule for further discussions. He also thanked Trump, Witkoff, Kushner and others in the United States working toward a peace agreement.
Earlier reports indicated that U.S.-mediated negotiations have struggled to produce a breakthrough. At the same time, Trump administration officials have continued exploring possible avenues for restarting negotiations.
Broader Diplomatic Push Continues
The latest conversation follows earlier contacts between Zelenskyy and Trump’s envoys. In July, the Ukrainian president and his negotiating team held discussions with Witkoff and Kushner focused on reinvigorating diplomacy and bringing peace closer.
Separately, U.S. diplomatic efforts have included discussions about a possible meeting involving Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy. However, major differences between Moscow and Kyiv continue to complicate prospects for such a summit.
For Ukraine, the proposed visit by Witkoff and Kushner could therefore become another important stage in the ongoing diplomatic process. No final date for the visit had been announced in Zelenskyy’s statement, but both sides indicated that discussions over the schedule and agenda were continuing.
