Zelenskyy Honors Ukraine’s National Legends, Praising Courage and Resilience

Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has used this year’s National Legend ceremony to emphasize what he described as a fundamental pillar of Ukraine’s statehood: the country’s enduring history, identity and determination to defend itself.
Speaking at the ceremony, Zelenskyy said the event represented a broader truth about Ukraine’s past, present and future. He stressed that Ukraine has existed throughout its history, continues to exist today and will remain a nation in the future.
The president highlighted the people recognized as National Legends, describing them as individuals whose achievements have brought distinction to Ukraine over many years. Their contributions, he said, demonstrate the strength of Ukrainian culture, talent and national identity.
Zelenskyy also drew attention to Ukrainians who fought for their country before its modern independence was restored. Their efforts, according to the president, form part of a much longer national story and demonstrate that the struggle for Ukraine did not begin with the current war.
A major focus of his remarks was the full-scale war. Zelenskyy praised Ukrainians who have demonstrated courage, resilience, professional excellence and determination during the conflict.
He said the achievements of soldiers, artists, professionals and ordinary citizens have helped demonstrate what he called Ukraine’s “legendary” character.
The ceremony therefore carried significance beyond the recognition of individual personalities. It was presented as an occasion to celebrate the qualities that Zelenskyy believes have helped Ukraine withstand the enormous pressures created by the war.
The president thanked the country’s warriors as well as Ukrainian citizens for their contributions. His remarks placed particular emphasis on collective strength, arguing that the country’s identity is reflected not only through famous historical figures but also through people demonstrating courage and dedication in difficult circumstances.
National recognition ceremonies can play an important symbolic role during periods of national crisis. By honoring individuals and recalling historical achievements, governments can reinforce a sense of continuity and national purpose.
For Ukraine, that symbolism has taken on additional importance during the ongoing war. Zelenskyy’s speech connected the country’s historical legacy with the determination of its present-day population.
He concluded by expressing gratitude to Ukraine’s defenders and people and reaffirming his message of national pride with the traditional Ukrainian patriotic greeting, “Glory to Ukraine.”
The ceremony ultimately served as both a tribute to distinguished Ukrainians and a broader statement about national resilience. Zelenskyy’s message was that Ukraine’s history, identity and future remain closely connected—and that the courage displayed by its people during wartime is becoming part of that continuing national legacy.
