Anthropic Brings Local Claude AI Processing to India Through Amazon Bedrock
New Delhi: Anthropic has expanded its artificial intelligence infrastructure in India by enabling in-country inference for Claude models through Amazon Bedrock, allowing requests made through the India endpoint to be processed within the country.

The move is particularly significant for banks, government organisations, large enterprises and other regulated institutions that need tighter control over where sensitive AI workloads are processed. Claude Opus 5, Claude Sonnet 5 and Claude Haiku 4.5 are now available with India-based inference through Amazon Bedrock.
AI Requests Can Be Processed Inside India
Under the new arrangement, prompts sent to Claude through the India endpoint and the resulting model responses can be processed on infrastructure located in India.
Amazon Web Services’ geographic cross-Region inference profile uses its Mumbai and Hyderabad regions, allowing processing to move between the two Indian regions when additional capacity is required while keeping the inference path within the country.
This is different from global cross-Region inference, where workloads can be distributed across AWS regions outside India.
Important for Regulated Industries
Data residency has become an increasingly important consideration for organisations deploying generative AI at production scale.
Banks, insurers, government agencies and large companies often handle confidential financial, customer or operational information. Keeping AI inference within India can reduce concerns associated with cross-border processing and make it easier for organisations to align AI deployments with their internal governance and regulatory requirements.
Anthropic has said Indian customers, particularly those in regulated sectors, had been seeking the ability to process Claude requests locally.
Enterprise AI Adoption Could Accelerate
The new capability could help move generative AI projects from experimentation to larger production deployments.
Anthropic says India is one of its largest markets, while industry reports indicate that Claude is already being used across banking, IT services, digital businesses and other sectors.
The company has also expanded its local presence and partnerships in India, signalling that the country is becoming an important part of its international AI strategy.
Audit and Governance Features
Claude deployments through Amazon Bedrock in India also provide features such as audit trails and access controls, which can be important for organisations that need to monitor AI use and establish internal compliance processes.
However, local processing alone does not automatically make every AI deployment compliant with every applicable regulation. Organisations still need to configure their AWS environment correctly and evaluate their own requirements concerning security, retention, access controls and data governance.
Lower Latency and Greater Resilience
Processing AI workloads within India could also provide performance benefits for Indian customers.
Instead of relying on infrastructure located in distant regions, organisations using the India geographic profile can have requests processed between AWS’s Mumbai and Hyderabad regions. This can provide additional capacity and resilience while keeping the processing geography limited to India.
For companies running large AI applications, predictable processing locations and regional capacity can become increasingly important as AI workloads grow.
A Major Step for India’s AI Ecosystem
Anthropic’s decision to offer local Claude inference represents another step in the development of India’s enterprise AI ecosystem.
For Indian businesses, the significance extends beyond access to another AI model. The availability of local inference addresses one of the practical barriers that can prevent organisations from deploying generative AI for sensitive workloads.
As more businesses move AI from pilot projects into everyday operations, requirements around data location, governance, security and reliability are expected to become increasingly important.
The India rollout therefore strengthens the country’s position as a major market for enterprise AI while giving organisations another option for deploying advanced generative AI capabilities within a locally processed infrastructure.
