Delhi Records Excess Monsoon Rain as August Brings Unusual Heat and Three-Year-High Average AQI

Delhi has experienced an unusual combination of heavy monsoon rainfall, persistently warm temperatures and elevated air pollution during August, with the city’s average air quality reaching its highest August level in three years.

Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) shows that Safdarjung has recorded 653.9 mm of rainfall since the beginning of the monsoon season, compared with a long-period average of 506.7 mm. That represents a surplus of 147.2 mm, or about 29% above normal.

Wettest Start to August in 15 Years

The unusual weather pattern became particularly clear during the opening week of August.

Delhi received approximately 127 mm of rainfall during the first seven days of the month, making it the wettest first week of August in 15 years. The previous comparable period with higher rainfall was recorded in 2011.

Another significant spell occurred on August 25. Safdarjung registered 99.1 mm of rain within 24 hours, making it the wettest August day at the station in two years.

The heavy downpour caused water accumulation and traffic disruption in several parts of the capital, demonstrating how quickly intense rainfall can put pressure on the city’s drainage and transport systems.

Rainfall Surplus Across Several Weather Stations

The excess rainfall has not been restricted to Safdarjung.

The Ridge recorded 703.1 mm during the monsoon period against a normal 432.1 mm, while Ayanagar received 686.3 mm compared with its normal 431.3 mm.

Lodhi Road recorded 648.2 mm against 506.7 mm, while Palam received 533.2 mm against its seasonal normal of 482.1 mm. These figures show that above-normal rainfall has been observed across several parts of the city.

August Rainfall Far Above Normal

The month itself has also been considerably wetter than usual.

Safdarjung recorded 354.1 mm during August, compared with a normal of 222.9 mm. That amounts to a surplus of roughly 59%.

At the Ridge, rainfall reached 357.4 mm against a normal of 181.3 mm, while Ayanagar received 383.2 mm compared with its normal of 179.2 mm.

The figures underline the unusually wet nature of the month, even though rainfall has not been continuous across every day.

Warm Temperatures Continue Despite Frequent Rain

One of the more unusual aspects of Delhi’s August weather has been the persistence of high temperatures despite repeated rainfall.

The average maximum temperature at Safdarjung through August 29 was 34.1°C, the highest average maximum for the period in two years.

The average minimum temperature was 26.8°C, matching the level recorded in 2023 and representing the highest average minimum since that year.

This combination of frequent rain and warm nights can contribute to uncomfortable conditions because high humidity can make temperatures feel considerably warmer than the thermometer reading.

Air Quality Reaches a Three-Year High

Rainfall has not prevented Delhi’s monthly average air quality from reaching a three-year high.

An analysis by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air found that Delhi’s average AQI for the first 28 days of August was 92, the highest August average since 2023.

Of those 28 days, 19 were classified as satisfactory while nine fell into the moderate category.

The month’s highest AQI reached 129, also the highest maximum August reading since 2023.

Although the monthly average remains considerably below the levels normally associated with severe pollution episodes, the rise is notable because August is generally expected to benefit from monsoon rainfall and atmospheric conditions that can help remove pollutants.

Current Air Quality Remains Moderate

Delhi’s air quality was still classified as moderate on Saturday.

CPCB data cited in a same-day report showed an AQI of 133 at 9 a.m., compared with a 24-hour average of 128 recorded at 4 p.m. on Friday. Under India’s AQI classification, readings from 101 to 200 fall within the moderate category.

The situation demonstrates that rainfall alone does not guarantee consistently clean air. Weather conditions, local emissions and atmospheric dispersion all influence daily pollution levels.

Weather Outlook for the Capital

The IMD forecast for Delhi indicated partly cloudy conditions and temperatures around 36°C during the day, with the minimum expected near 26°C. The agency’s local forecast showed similar partly cloudy conditions continuing into the following days.

For residents, this means that the capital may continue experiencing warm and humid weather even as the monsoon season remains active.

A Complex Environmental Picture

Delhi’s August weather presents a complicated environmental picture.

On one side, abundant rainfall can replenish water resources and temporarily improve atmospheric conditions. On the other, intense rainfall can cause urban flooding and waterlogging, while high temperatures and stagnant atmospheric conditions can contribute to discomfort and pollution.

The coexistence of excess rainfall, warm temperatures and a relatively elevated monthly AQI highlights the difficulty of describing the city’s environmental conditions through a single weather indicator.

What the Data Means for Delhi

The latest figures provide an important snapshot of how variable urban weather can become during the monsoon.

Delhi has received substantially more rain than its seasonal average, yet the city has also experienced unusually warm temperatures and its highest August average AQI in three years.

The combination reinforces the importance of improving urban drainage, monitoring air pollution and maintaining reliable weather-warning systems.

As the monsoon season progresses, officials and residents will continue watching rainfall patterns, temperatures and air-quality readings closely. For Delhi, August 2026 has already emerged as a month in which heavy rain, persistent heat and changing air quality have occurred side by side.
